Our story ~ OUR roots

As a second-generation Jamaican British woman, my roots are at the heart of everything I do.

My parents came to the UK in the 1960s as part of the Windrush generation. My mum was the only sister among four brothers, and like so many Jamaican families of that generation, they didn’t just come to Britain—they brought Jamaica with them.

Growing up in South London, often known as “Little Jamaica”, I was surrounded by the culture, traditions and community that kept our heritage alive. Jamaica wasn’t just somewhere my parents came from. It wasn’t just a holiday destination we visited. Jamaica was in our home, our food, our music, our remedies and our way of life. It’s woven into who I am and has shaped the woman I am today.

One thing that was always important in our family was taking care of our skin. In Jamaican culture, skincare isn’t about trends or luxury it’s about self-care, wellbeing, and using the natural ingredients that God has provided. Looking after your skin was simply part of everyday life.

Growing up, my siblings and I were taught from a young age to care for our skin. It was something that was passed down through generations, and it’s a tradition I’ve proudly continued with my own children.

My mum was my first introduction to natural skincare and holistic wellness. Long before natural skincare became popular, she was creating her own remedies using herbs and natural ingredients. She would make treatments for the skin, balms to soothe aches and pains, and natural hair remedies to help with my alopecia. Watching her combine traditional Jamaican knowledge with nature’s healing ingredients was something truly special.

As a child, I didn’t realise how much those moments would stay with me. But looking back now, I can see how deeply they influenced my passion for skincare and my belief in the power of natural ingredients.

Those memories, those traditions, and those lessons became the foundation of SGC.

SGC is more than a skincare brand. It’s a celebration of my heritage, my family, and the wisdom that was passed down to me by my mother and the generations before her. Every product is inspired by the belief that skincare should nourish more than just your skin it should nurture confidence, wellbeing and self-love.

My parents brought Jamaica with them when they came to Britain in the 1960s. They passed that culture, knowledge and pride on to me, and I’ve passed it on to my children.

SGC is my way of honouring that journey.
